Dealing With Problems in Your Evaporative Cooler
There are many people who are opting for evaporative coolers because they are easy to install and are energy-efficient. These coolers can be a boon to homeowners if they are used correctly. There are many people who pay high energy bills because they have not installed correctly.
One of the biggest mistake people make is that they do not understand what evaporative coolers are and how they can cool your home. They consider these coolers as a cheap imitation of their expensive air conditioner. Evaporative coolers are different from air conditioners as they work differently to cool your home. These coolers work best in places where the weather is dry. Unlike air conditioners, these coolers work on the principle of displacement of air. To get the best results you keep the windows at the far end of your home open. If you limit the flow of air your home will become stuffy and humid and decrease the cooling properties of the cooler. For best result fix your evaporative heater in open window and make sure you keep another window in some other part of your home open. If you drawing cool air inside your home it is important that you have an opening to let out the hot air.
Window-Mounted Air Conditioner
Another mistake that people make is that they don't maintain the evaporative pads. If you find the tap water is dirty, make sure you supply filtered water to the cooler. The evaporative pads of the cooler will clog after some time, so make sure you change them if you want the cooler to work efficiently. Prolonged usage of the evaporative pads can lower is microbial resistance and may allow the growth of mold. People who have seasonal allergies need to be worried if they find mold in their cooler. When buying pads make sure you buy the right size. If there is a gap in the intake panel of the cooler it could have a negative impact on your cooling output. The air that enters the cooler will try to enter an area where there is least resistance thereby affecting the efficiency of the cooler.
Another problem area that people need to look into is the use of wrong belts. Most people buy belts of lower or higher tension that will eventually crack. Details of the correct belt tension can usually be found on the framework or blower housing. Make sure you don't tighten the belt more than what is recommended by the company. When you use incorrect belt it could affect the blower bearing and make the unit noisier. To ensure the smooth functioning of the cooler make sure you add a few drops of oil to the blower bearing.
The fourth problem will arise if you are using a window mounted evaporative cooler. There are many people who leave gaps between the cooler and the window frame. There is no point in cooling your room if you have gaps that let in hot air. To prevent hot air from entering the room you can fix panels around the cooler.
Before the onset of winter, make sure you drain the water in the cooler and cover the cooler. If you don't cover the cooler it could become a nesting place for birds and insects.
